How to Get Your Rhode Island Permit License

Complete an approved driver's education course

Complete an approved driver's education course, such as the one offered through the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), before applying for a Limited Instruction Permit.

Apply for a Limited Instruction Permit at 16

Apply with parent or guardian consent. Pass the 40-question knowledge test (70%, 28 correct) and a vision screening.

• Birth certificate or equivalent
• Proof of Social Security number and residency
• Parent or guardian signature

Drive only with a qualifying supervising driver

A supervising driver must be at least 21 years old and have held a license for at least 5 years.

Log 50 hours of supervised driving

Complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.

Hold the permit at least 6 months

Hold the Limited Instruction Permit for at least 6 months before applying for a license.

Pass the road test and receive a limited provisional license

Once eligible, pass the road test. No passengers other than the DMV examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the test.

Follow limited provisional license restrictions for 12 months

No unsupervised driving 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. (exceptions for work, volunteering, or a supervising driver), no more than one non-family passenger under 21, and no cell phone use, even hands-free. Violations carry escalating fines.

Apply for a permit

Apply at DMV headquarters in Cranston; the 6-month hold and hour-logging requirements still apply.

Pass the knowledge test

Pass the same 40-question knowledge test (70%, 28 correct) and a vision screening, given in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Practice and pass the road test

Practice driving under the terms of the permit, then pass the road test to receive a license.

Receive your full license

An adult first-time applicant receives a standard, unrestricted license upon passing.
