How to Get Your South Carolina CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with SCDMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid South Carolina driver's license

    You need a valid, unexpired noncommercial South Carolina driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within South Carolina, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination and self-certify to the SCDMV that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s) and pay per-test fees

    At an SCDMV office, pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle — each test costs $2.

  4. Pay the application and CLP fees

    Pay a $15 application fee and $2.50 for the CLP itself to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for one year.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 calendar days before scheduling the skills test.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT), if required

    If your CLP was issued after February 7, 2022, federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-approved provider before the skills test.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection, an off-road component, and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, the SCDMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • An out-of-state CLP isn't transferable to South Carolina — you must pass the general knowledge test and any other applicable tests before an SC CLP is issued.
