How to Get Your South Dakota CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with South Dakota DPS directly.

  1. Decide your class and gather original documents

Decide which class (A, B, or C) and any endorsements you'll need up front. Bring only original documents or certified copies — photocopies aren't accepted.

    • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency
  2. Get your medical certificate

Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

    • Medical Examiner's Certificate
  3. Pay $33 and pass the knowledge test(s)

Pay the $33 application fee and pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%), plus $15 per additional endorsement test if applicable.

  4. Receive your CLP

Once you pass, receive your commercial learner's permit, valid for six months.

  5. Wait out the mandatory 14-day holding period

Hold the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test can be scheduled.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

Once you pass, receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • South Dakota's $33 application fee is separate from the $15 charged per additional endorsement test.
  • Exact fees and required documents change over time — confirm the current process with the official South Dakota DPS website before your appointment.
