How to Get Your Tennessee CDL License

Hold a valid Tennessee driver's license
You need a valid noncommercial Tennessee driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Tennessee, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Get your DOT medical certificate
Complete a DOT medical examination and self-certify to TDOSHS that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

Pass the knowledge test(s)
At a Driver Services Center, pass the general knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

Pay the fee and obtain your CLP
Pay $14 for a Class A CLP or $13 for Class B/C to receive your Commercial Learner Permit, valid for 12 months.
Hold the CLP at least 14 days
Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling the skills test.
Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)
Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.
Receive your CDL
Once you pass, TDOSHS issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

- Tennessee CDL holders are held to a 0.04% BAC limit even in their own personal, noncommercial vehicle, not just while driving commercially.
