Standard Process
Apply for a motorcycle permit
Apply at a Driver Services Center; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.
Pass the written knowledge test
Pass the 30-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 24 correct), based on the Tennessee Motorcycle Operator Manual.
Practice with the motorcycle permit
Practice riding under the terms of your motorcycle permit before scheduling the skills test.
Pass the skills test
Pass the on-cycle skills test at a Driver Services Center to have the motorcycle classification added to your license.
Approved Rider Training Course
Enroll in an approved motorcycle rider training course
Enroll in a Tennessee-approved motorcycle rider training course as an alternative to testing directly at a Driver Services Center.
Complete the course
Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course provider.
- Course completion certificate
Have the skills test waived
Present your course completion certificate to Driver Services; completing an approved course can waive the skills test for many riders.
Receive your motorcycle classification
Once the waiver is processed, the motorcycle classification is added to your existing license.

- Tennessee has a universal helmet law — every operator and passenger, regardless of age, must wear a helmet meeting the federal FMVSS 218 standard.
- Lane splitting is illegal in Tennessee; a motorcycle can't pass between two lines of traffic moving in the same direction.
