How to Get Your Tennessee Permit License

Age 15-17

  1. Apply for a learner permit at 15

    Apply for a Tennessee learner permit starting at age 15, after passing the written exam and vision screening.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the 30-question knowledge test (80%, 24 correct) within the official 60-minute time limit. Applicants 15-17 can take the test at home, supervised by a parent or guardian via the Tennessee Proctor ID App, or in person at a Driver Services Center.

  3. Log 50 hours of supervised driving

    Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, verified by a parent, guardian, or driving instructor. A learner permit holder must be accompanied by someone at least 21 with a valid license while driving.

  4. Hold the permit at least 180 days

    Tennessee requires holding the learner permit for 180 days before advancing to an Intermediate Restricted license.

  5. Apply for your Intermediate Restricted license

    Once the 180-day holding period and supervised-hour requirements are met, apply for an Intermediate Restricted license.

  6. Follow Intermediate Restricted license limits

    Carry only one passenger (unless an exception applies) and don't drive 11 p.m.-6 a.m., except with a licensed parent/guardian, a parent-designated 21+ driver, or for work/school events.

  7. Move to a full license

    Graduated-license restrictions end automatically once you turn 18.

Age 18 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner permit

    Apply for a learner permit at a Driver Services Center; the at-home Proctor ID App option is limited to applicants 15-17.

  2. Pass the knowledge test in person

    Pass the same 30-question knowledge test (80%, 24 correct) within the 60-minute time limit, in person at a Driver Services Center.

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of your learner permit, then pass the road test to receive your license.

  4. Receive your full license

    Adult first-time applicants receive a standard, unrestricted license upon passing — Tennessee's graduated licensing restrictions apply specifically to applicants who start the process as minors.
