How to Get Your Utah CDL License
The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Utah DLD directly.
Hold a valid Utah Class D license
You need a valid noncommercial Utah Class D license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Utah, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Get your DOT medical certificate
Complete a DOT medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.
- Medical Examiner's Certificate
Pass the knowledge test(s) and pay the bundled fee
Pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable. Pay the $52 fee, which bundles the CLP with all three written tests — two free attempts each before a $26 retake fee applies.
Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)
Since February 2022, federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.
Complete a HAZMAT background check if pursuing that endorsement
A HAZMAT endorsement requires a federal background check, typically taking 30-90 days and costing $80-110.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test ($78, CDL issuance included): a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for. Rescheduling costs a separate $25.
Receive your CDL
Once you pass, the DLD issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
- Utah bundles fees more than most states — the $52 CLP covers all three written tests, and the $78 skills test fee covers CDL issuance.
