How to Get Your Virginia Motorcycle License

Standard Process

  1. Apply for a motorcycle learner's permit

    Apply at a DMV customer service center; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge exam and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge exam

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge exam (80%, 20 correct) based on the Motorcycle Operator Manual.

  3. Hold the permit at least 30 days

    Virginia requires holding the motorcycle learner's permit for at least 30 days before the skills test can be scheduled.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test at a DMV facility to have the motorcycle classification added to your license.

Rider Training Program Alternative

  1. Enroll in Virginia's Rider Training Program

    Enroll in a DMV-approved motorcycle rider training course as an alternative to the standard permit-and-test process.

  2. Complete the course

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course.

  3. Have the skills test waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the DMV; completing an approved course can waive the skills test for eligible riders.

  4. Receive your motorcycle classification
