How to Get Your Washington CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with WA DOL directly.

  1. Hold a valid Washington driver's license

    You need a valid noncommercial Washington driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Washington, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination and prepare a Medical Examiner's Certificate, submitted later along with the CDL issuance fee.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s) at a WA DOL office

    Pass the general knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle, at a WA DOL office.

  4. Pay the fee and obtain your CLP

    Pay the $40 CLP fee to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for 180 days and renewable once.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days, supervised

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test. During this time, you may only drive a commercial vehicle with a fully licensed CDL holder in the passenger seat.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Schedule the skills test with a WA DOL-authorized third-party tester — a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Submit your medical certificate and receive your CDL

    Submit your Medical Examiner's Certificate and pay the CDL issuance fee; the DOL then issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license.

  • Unlike states where the knowledge and skills tests happen at the same location, Washington's knowledge test is at a DOL office while the skills test is scheduled separately with a third-party tester.
