How to Get Your Washington Motorcycle License

Standard 2-Wheel (2W) Endorsement

  1. Apply for a motorcycle instruction permit

    Apply at a DOL office; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct), based on the state's motorcycle manual.

  3. Practice with the instruction permit

    Practice riding under the terms of your instruction permit before scheduling the skills test.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test to have the 2-Wheel (2W) endorsement added to your license.

Approved Motorcycle Training Course

  1. Enroll in an approved motorcycle training course

    Enroll in a Washington-approved motorcycle training course as an alternative to the standard permit-and-test process.

  2. Complete the course

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course.

    • Course completion certificate

  3. Have the skills test waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the DOL; completing an approved course can waive the skills test for many riders.

  4. Receive your 2W endorsement

    Once the waiver is processed, the 2-Wheel endorsement is added to your existing license.

Notes

  • Washington has a universal helmet law — every operator and passenger must wear a helmet, manufacturer-certified to DOT standards and marked with a visible DOT sticker on the back.
  • Lane splitting is illegal in Washington; a motorcyclist must occupy a full lane like any other vehicle.
