How to Get Your West Virginia CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with WV DMV directly.

  1. Confirm your license and driving-experience eligibility

    You must already hold a Class E operator's license, a Level 3 GDL, or a Class D license, with at least one year of driving experience, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within West Virginia, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your medical certificate

    Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pay the testing fee and pass the knowledge test(s)

    Pay the $25 testing fee, which covers the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%), the air brakes test, and the combination-vehicle test.

  4. Receive your CLP

    Once you pass, receive your commercial learner's permit.

  5. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) if first-time

    A first-time CDL applicant, and a first-time Passenger, School Bus, or Hazardous Materials endorsement applicant, must complete ELDT through an authorized provider, following federal FMCSA standards.

  6. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  7. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • West Virginia's one-year prior-driving-experience requirement before applying for a CLP is a real eligibility hurdle most neighboring states don't impose.
