How to Get Your Wisconsin Permit License

Under 18

  1. Enroll in certified driver education and apply for an instruction permit at 15 years 6 months

  2. Pass both required tests

    Pass a 50-question knowledge test (80%, 40 correct) and a separate 15-question road-signs test (80%, 12 correct), plus a vision screening.

  3. Drive only with a qualifying supervisor

    A driving instructor, parent/guardian, or any licensed driver 21 or older must be in the front seat whenever you drive on the instruction permit.

  4. Log 50 hours of supervised driving

    Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving with a parent or guardian, including a minimum of 10 hours after dark.

  5. Stay violation-free for 6 months

    Maintain a violation-free record for at least 6 months as an instruction permit holder before applying for a probationary license.

  6. Apply for your probationary license at 16

    Once you've turned 16, completed driver education coursework and behind-the-wheel hours, and met the violation-free and supervised-hour requirements, pass the road test (or receive a waiver) to receive a probationary license.

  7. Follow probationary license restrictions

    For the first 9 months, passengers are limited to immediate family, one licensed driver, and one other passenger. No driving midnight-5 a.m., except directly between home and school or home and work.

  8. Move to a full license

18 and Older

  1. Apply for an instruction permit

    Apply for an instruction permit at an DMV office; certified driver education is not required for applicants 18 and older.
