How to Get Your Wyoming CDL License
The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with WYDOT directly.
Sort out class, endorsements, and paperwork up front
Wyoming's process punishes indecision more than most: figure out whether you need Class A, B, or C, and which endorsements (tanker, hazmat, and so on) up front, since each one tacks on its own separate knowledge test at the same appointment. Only original documents or certified copies are accepted — a photocopy sends you home to try again.
- Proof of identity, Social Security number, and Wyoming residency
Clear the DOT physical
A federally qualified medical examiner has to sign off that you meet the physical standards for commercial driving before anything else moves forward.
- Medical Examiner's Certificate
Take advantage of Wyoming's free knowledge tests
The 50-question General Knowledge test, and any endorsement tests layered on top, cost nothing to sit — a real contrast to the fees waiting at every later stage of this process.
Get your CLP and start the clock
A Commercial Learner's Permit costs $45 and is valid for 180 days, but it isn't just a formality — Wyoming makes you actually hold it for 14 days before the skills test unlocks.
Pay the nonrefundable skills-exam fee before testing
Unlike a fee charged after the fact, Wyoming's $85 skills-exam charge is collected in advance and stays nonrefundable no matter how the test goes, so treat that payment as the real commitment point in the process.
Pass the road evaluation for your class
The skills test itself pairs a pre-trip inspection with an on-road evaluation matched to whichever class — A, B, or C — you applied for.
Walk away licensed
A passing result converts directly into your commercial driver's license, with every endorsement you tested for already attached.
Notes
- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
- Wyoming's licensing agency is WYDOT's Driver Services program.
- Exact fees and required documents change over time — confirm the current process with the official WYDOT website before your appointment.
