How to Get Your Wyoming Permit License
The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with WYDOT directly.
Regular Permit (age 15)
Apply for an instruction permit at 15
Apply in person at a WYDOT Driver Services office — Wyoming's written test has no online option. Pass the 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) and a vision screening. The permit costs $15 and stays valid for 1 year.
- Birth certificate or equivalent
- Proof of Social Security number and Wyoming residency
- Parent or guardian signature
Drive only with a qualifying supervisor
A supervisor must be a licensed driver at least 18 years old, in the front seat at every drive.
Log 50 hours of supervised driving
Complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night, documented on a Behind-the-Wheel Certification form.
Hold the permit for at least 10 days
Hold the instruction permit for a minimum of 10 days before applying for an intermediate license.
Apply for an intermediate license
Pass the road test once the hold period, hours, and certification form are complete.
Restricted Learner's Permit (ages 14-15, hardship)
Confirm hardship eligibility
A Restricted Learner's Permit is available as young as 14 to an applicant who meets one or more specific qualifying hardship criteria.
Apply at a WYDOT Driver Services office
Pass the same 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) and vision screening as the regular permit path.
Follow the same supervision and hour requirements
The same 50-hour supervised-driving requirement, including 10 at night, and the same 18-and-older supervisor rule apply regardless of which path was used to qualify.
Notes
- An intermediate license holder may not drive unsupervised between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., with exceptions for a licensed adult 18+ riding along, or travel to/from school, a religious activity, work, or a medical emergency.
- An intermediate license holder may not carry more than one passenger under 18 who isn't immediate family, unless a licensed adult with full driving privileges is in the front seat.
- Both restrictions lift at 17, or as early as 16 and a half with driver's education plus 6 months on the intermediate license.
